Rupee Hits Record Low Amid Growth Concerns and Trade Deficit

The Indian rupee tumbled to its weakest level ever on Friday, pressured by concerns over the country’s slowing economic growth and widening trade deficit. The decline was further aggravated by increased demand for dollars from maturing financial contracts like non-deliverable forwards and currency futures.

Early in the trading day, the rupee dropped to a record low of 85.8075 against the U.S. dollar. This sharp fall created panic among importers, who began buying dollars in bulk, further driving down the rupee. However, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) intervened later in the day, helping the rupee recover some of its losses. By the close of trading, the currency was at 85.5325, down 0.3%, marking its steepest single-day drop in seven months.

This week’s performance extended the rupee’s losing streak to eight consecutive weeks, with the currency falling by 0.3% overall during this period. The ongoing decline has raised concerns as the rupee continues to hit new record lows for several sessions.

The rupee’s weakness is also tied to the Federal Reserve’s aggressive monetary policy and expectations around U.S. economic policies. A strong dollar globally has added further pressure on the Indian currency. Traders noted that the RBI’s absence earlier in the session led to strong dollar bids, which pushed the rupee down sharply.

Despite this, experts believe the RBI is allowing the rupee’s to gradually adjust. According to Abhishek Goenka, CEO of FX advisory firm IFA Global, the central bank seems intent on correcting the rupee’s overvaluation compared to other currencies.

The sharp decline has underscored the challenges facing the rupee amid global financial uncertainty and domestic economic pressures. The RBI’s intervention highlights its role in managing extreme fluctuations to maintain stability.
