A New Era of Connectivity in the Gulf by Ooredoo Group

Ooredoo Group is set to launch a major project called Fibre in Gulf (FIG) to improve digital connectivity across the Gulf region. This advanced submarine cable system will link seven GCC countries: Qatar, Oman, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. The project aims to boost internet speed, enhance network security, and improve communication between the Middle East and Europe.

High-Speed Internet for Businesses and Individuals

The FIG cable system will have up to 24 fibre pairs, allowing a total capacity of 720 terabits per second (Tbps). With this high-speed infrastructure, businesses, governments, cloud service providers, and telecommunication companies will experience faster and more reliable connections. Additionally, it will support artificial intelligence (AI) applications, data centres, and digital transformation projects across the region.

Ooredoo Group’s Vision for Digital Expansion

Ooredoo Group CEO Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo stated that this initiative aligns with the company’s goal of becoming a leader in digital infrastructure. He emphasized that the submarine cable will strengthen the region’s internet capacity, making it a key data hub between Asia and Europe. The demand for faster internet and seamless digital services is growing, and this project will help meet that need.

Partnership with Leading Technology Provider

Ooredoo Group has partnered with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), a top global provider of undersea cable systems, to build FIG. ASN’s CEO, Alain Biston, said that this project would transform the region’s digital landscape. He added that their cutting-edge technology would support the Gulf’s ambitions to become a global connectivity hub.

Ooredoo Group Boosting the Region’s Digital Economy

This new submarine cable will create new opportunities for tech companies, cloud service providers, and digital businesses. By providing a direct, low-latency connection to Europe, FIG will help the GCC region attract global investments and accelerate technological growth.

Ooredoo Group continues to expand its digital presence. In 2024, it became the first NVIDIA Cloud Partner in the region and introduced advanced GPU chips for AI and cloud computing. With projects like FIG, Ooredoo Group is shaping the future of digital connectivity in the Gulf.
