Meloni Boosts Gulf Relations
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strengthened ties with Gulf nations(Italy-UAE) since 2022. She ignored political opposition concerns over human rights while deepening economic and defense partnerships. She welcomed UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Rome on Monday. Both leaders committed to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” during the visit.
$40 Billion Investment Commitment
The UAE pledged $40 billion in investments in Italy during a Rome summit. The joint statement did not specify a timeframe or companies involved. More than 40 agreements covered economic, defense, nuclear, and space sectors. Italy and the UAE aim to boost cooperation in infrastructure, finance, and cultural heritage projects.
Defense and Security Collaboration
Italy lifted arms embargoes on the UAE and Saudi Arabia under Meloni’s leadership. Both countries will enhance military and cybersecurity cooperation. They plan to collaborate on defense manufacturing and joint production. The agreement includes technology transfers and security partnerships. Both governments will conduct joint cybersecurity exercises to counter ransomware threats.
Energy and Technology Partnerships
Italian energy giant Eni signed deals with UAE firms MGX and G42 for Italian data centers. These centers will use natural gas and carbon capture technology. Eni also partnered with Masdar and Taqa for renewable energy projects. Italy and the UAE will expand cooperation in hydrogen production and carbon reduction technologies.
Critical Minerals and AI Development
Eni and Abu Dhabi’s ADQ signed an agreement on the critical minerals supply chain. Italy and the UAE aim to collaborate on artificial intelligence, space research, and rare earth elements. Italian and Emirati firms will launch joint ventures in AI-driven industries.
Growing Business Ties
Meloni called the investment deal a historic milestone at the UAE Business Forum. She emphasized a focus on strategic sectors, including renewable energy and cybersecurity. Italian businesses will gain new opportunities in UAE markets.
Regional Influence Expansion
Last month, Meloni secured a $10 billion partnership with Saudi Arabia. Italy continues strengthening economic and diplomatic relations across the Gulf region. Italian companies seek to expand exports and attract more Gulf investments.
