India Records Its Hottest Year in 2024
India experienced its hottest year ever in 2024, with the annual average temperature rising 0.65°C above the 1991-2020 average. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the year set new heat records since data collection began in 1901. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the IMD director-general, confirmed that extreme weather caused by climate change played a significant role.
Heatwaves and Soaring Temperatures
In 2024, India endured its longest and most intense heatwave. Temperatures in some areas crossed 45°C, with New Delhi recording a staggering 49.2°C in May. This matched the capital’s all-time high from 2022. Such relentless heat made daily life challenging, particularly for those without access to cooling facilities. Residents in cities like Delhi depended on water trucks to cope with the severe conditions.
Global Warming and Its Effects
Global warming, largely driven by burning fossil fuels like coal, is causing more extreme weather. Warmer air holds more moisture, leading to heavier rainfall and stronger storms. Rising ocean temperatures also result in increased evaporation, intensifying weather patterns. These changes cause widespread destruction, from property damage to crop failures, and contribute to financial losses worldwide.

India’s Commitment to Fight Climate Change
As the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, India faces mounting pressure to act. The country has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, although this lags behind commitments from industrialized nations. Currently, India remains heavily reliant on coal for electricity. Transitioning to cleaner energy sources is crucial to combating the effects of climate change.
The year 2024 highlighted the urgent need for action against global warming. With temperatures and natural disasters rising, it’s clear that addressing climate change is no longer optional.
