North India Freezes as Himachal Pradesh Faces Heavy Snow and Sub-Zero Temperatures

North India is reeling under a severe cold wave, with Himachal Pradesh experiencing heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. Popular tourist destinations like Dharamshala, Manali, and McLeodganj are covered in a thick blanket of snow, creating a picturesque winter wonderland. However, the freezing weather has posed challenges for residents and tourists alike.

Sub-Zero Nights in Dharamshala

Dharamshala and nearby areas are witnessing freezing nights, with temperatures dropping to 0–1°C. The Dhauladhar mountains, draped in fresh snow, create a breathtaking view but add to the difficulties faced by locals. Tushar, a resident, shared that the cold has intensified over the past few days, making mornings and evenings particularly harsh. He said, “People are struggling to step outside without multiple layers of warm clothing.”

Impact on Daily Life

The intense cold is disrupting daily activities for many. Anup, another resident, mentioned that the recent heavy rain and snowfall worsened the situation. He added that commuting to work in the mornings and evenings has become extremely challenging. Residents are heavily reliant on gloves, jackets, and other warm clothing to cope with the freezing temperatures.

Snowfall Draws Tourists to Manali

In Manali, tourists are enjoying snow-covered landscapes under sunny skies. Paragliding and other adventure activities continue to attract visitors, despite the chilling weather. Many tourists are hoping for more snowfall during their stay to make the most of their winter vacation.

Dense Fog and Frost Add to the Chill

The Dhauladhar region is also experiencing intermittent rain, dense fog, and ground frost, further lowering the temperatures. In areas like Naddi, Dharamkot, Bhagsunag, and McLeodganj, daytime temperatures remain between 4–5°C, while nighttime temperatures hover around zero.

IMD Warns of More Cold Waves

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh spell of cold waves, dense fog, and ground frost is expected to hit the region starting December 30. Lower hills and plains of Himachal Pradesh are likely to experience these harsh conditions, making it even colder in the coming days.

Despite the challenges, North India’s snowy charm continues to draw tourists, while residents brace themselves for the biting cold. Warm clothing and precautions are essential to stay safe and enjoy the beauty of this winter season.
