COVID-19 Cases Spike in Hong Kong and Singapore
COVID-19 cases are rising fast in parts of Southeast Asia. Hong Kong and Singapore are seeing some of the highest increases in recent months. Health experts warn the numbers could go up even more in the coming weeks.
Hong Kong Sees Sharp Rise in COVID-19 Infections
In Hong Kong, COVID activity is now much higher than before. Albert Au from the Centre for Health Protection said the virus is “quite active.” The number of people testing positive went from 1.7% in March to 11.4% now. That’s higher than the last big wave in August 2024. Health officials are asking older adults, pregnant women, and those with weak immune systems to get their COVID-19 vaccines or booster shots. Hong Kong has also made it easier for people to get their first dose.
COVID-19 Cases Double in Singapore
Singapore is also facing a big jump in COVID-19 cases. In one week, the country recorded 25,900 new cases. That’s almost double the number from the week before. The rise is caused by new versions of the Omicron variant, known as KP.1 and KP.2, also called FLiRT variants. These versions now make up most of the new cases. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said this wave could peak by the end of June.
Government Takes New Safety Steps
To help hospitals cope, the Singapore government is taking action. They are delaying non-urgent surgeries and moving some patients to care centers or home care. People are also being told to wear masks indoors, especially in crowded places. If you feel sick, stay home and rest. The government wants to stop the virus from spreading more.
Vaccination Still Key to Protection
Vaccines still offer the best protection against COVID. In Singapore, 80% of people got their first or booster dose. But many haven’t had a shot in over a year. Health teams are reminding people to stay up to date.
With rising COVID-19 cases, staying alert and careful can help protect you and others.
