Vodafone Idea May Shut Down After FY26 Without Govt Help

Vodafone Idea Warns It May Not Survive Beyond FY26 Without More Government Help

Vodafone Idea, one of India’s big telecom companies, is facing serious money problems. The company has warned that it might not continue after the financial year 2025-26 (FY26) without extra help from the government. The main reason is huge debts from adjusted gross revenue (AGR) and spectrum charges.

In 2019, the Supreme Court changed the rules about AGR, making telecom companies owe more money. Vodafone Idea’s total debt is about ₹2.3 lakh crore. Out of this, ₹77,000 crore is for AGR dues, and ₹1.4 lakh crore is for spectrum charges.

Government Help So Far

To help Vodafone Idea, the government turned ₹36,950 crore of the company’s debt into shares, increasing its stake to 49%. This step gave Vodafone Idea some relief by cutting its dues for the next three years by more than 66%.

But despite this help, Vodafone Idea still has to pay ₹43,000 crore every year between FY28 and FY31 for AGR and spectrum dues. This is a huge amount to manage while also running the business.

Court Rejects Vodafone Idea’s Plea

Vodafone Idea asked the Supreme Court to forgive over $5 billion of its dues to the government. Unfortunately, the court said no. This was a big blow to the company, increasing its financial problems.

After the rejection, Vodafone Idea’s shares dropped by as much as 10%. The company continues to struggle with large outstanding payments.

Urgent Need for More Support

Vodafone Idea’s CEO, Akshaya Moondra, has asked the government for more help. He warned that without quick support, the company might not survive past FY26. Lack of help could also stop the company from getting more loans from banks.

Experts say Vodafone Idea will face a shortage of ₹25,000 crore in FY26 and ₹36,000 crore in FY27. To cover this gap, Vodafone Idea would need to raise its prices by 85% in FY26 and 122% in FY27. Such price hikes are very tough in a competitive market.

What’s Next ?

Vodafone Idea’s future looks uncertain because of heavy debts and the need for more financial help. The government’s past support helped temporarily. However, Vodafone Idea needs extra aid and big changes to survive long term. Without this, the company may not keep running beyond FY26.
