UAE Nature Reserve Expansion: A Big Step for the Environment
The UAE has taken a huge step toward protecting its natural world. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the expansion of the country’s protected areas. With this new move, the total area of nature reserves in Abu Dhabi will grow to 22,821 square kilometers. This expansion brings the Zayed Network of Nature Reserves to 26 sites across land and sea.
This major UAE nature reserve expansion aims to protect wildlife, restore ecosystems, and support the National Biodiversity Strategy 2031. The plan highlights the country’s strong commitment to sustainability and preserving its unique landscapes for future generations.
New Protected Areas Across Abu Dhabi
As part of this initiative, the UAE will add 4,581 square kilometers of new protected areas. This means nearly 20 percent of Abu Dhabi’s total land will now be under conservation.
New reserves include Al Wathba Fossil Dunes Reserve, Liwa Groundwater Reservoir Reserve, and the Ghaf Natural Reserve. In the sea, two new marine reserves — Abu Al Abyad Marine Reserve and Sir Bani Yas & Desert Islands Marine Reserve — will protect marine life.

Existing reserves like Qasr Al Sarab and Ras Ghanada will also be expanded to create larger safe zones for plants and animals.
Protecting Nature for the Future
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) will manage these new and expanded reserves. The goal is to safeguard wildlife, restore damaged habitats, and promote sustainable tourism. Officials believe this UAE nature reserve expansion will help the country meet its local and global conservation goals.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of EAD, said the move reflects the UAE’s vision to protect nature and wildlife. He praised the leadership’s dedication to creating a greener, cleaner future.
Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Vice Chairman of EAD, said the new areas will help track wildlife, improve research, and restore natural balance in ecosystems. Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, added that this effort supports the UAE’s Biodiversity Strategy 2031 and the world’s 30×30 conservation goal — to protect 30 percent of the planet by 2030.
A Global Example of Sustainability
The UAE’s leadership in environmental protection continues to grow. As the country hosts the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025, this expansion shows its strong role in global conservation.
This UAE nature reserve expansion not only protects animals and plants but also inspires other nations to act. With these efforts, the UAE is proving that economic growth and environmental care can go hand in hand.
