Oman Citizenship: New Law Defines Loss, Revocation, and Withdrawal Criteria
Stricter Regulations on Nationality Laws
Oman has introduced a new Nationality Law (Royal Decree No. 17/2025) with strict citizenship rules. The law sets conditions for losing, revoking, and withdrawing nationality. It reinforces loyalty and national integrity requirements. The new law aims to prevent misuse of Omani nationality and maintain the country’s sovereignty. Additionally, it ensures that individuals benefiting from citizenship contribute positively to the nation.
Loss of Nationality
Omanis who obtain foreign nationality illegally will automatically lose their Omani status. A foreigner gaining Omani nationality through marriage to an Omani woman loses it after divorce within five years. Children retain their nationality even if their father loses his citizenship.
A foreign woman acquiring nationality through marriage loses it after marrying a non-Omani after divorce. Loss of nationality takes effect from the date of the second marriage. Individuals must notify authorities of changes in marital status to avoid penalties. Residency requirements also apply to individuals seeking to retain their nationality.
Revocation of Status
The government can revoke nationality for actions against Oman’s interests. Insulting the Sultan or the country can result in status loss. Joining harmful organizations or supporting ideologies against national interests may lead to revocation. Promoting propaganda or engaging in activities that threaten security can also result in loss of status.
Individuals working for foreign governments against national interests must resign or lose their nationality. Serving hostile nations engaged against Oman also results in revocation. Authorities may reinstate nationality if previous violations no longer exist. The law ensures that those granted nationality uphold national values and responsibilities.
Citizenship Withdrawal
Oman withdraws nationality from individuals who obtained it through fraud or illegal means. Crimes against state security result in nationality loss under Article 27. Multiple felony convictions within five years of acquiring nationality also lead to withdrawal.
Long-term absence from Oman without a valid reason may result in status loss. Individuals staying outside Oman for over 24 consecutive months risk losing their nationality. Those who fail to maintain ties with the country may face difficulties in reinstating their status. The government continues to enforce regulations that protect national interests and integrity.
