Kuwait Moves Ahead with 1.1GW Solar Project in Shagaya
Kuwait has taken a big step towards clean energy. The country has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a large solar project. This project is part of the Shagaya Renewable Energy Park and will have a capacity of 1.1 gigawatts (GW). It is one of the largest solar projects in the region.
Focus on Solar Energy
Kuwait is focusing more on solar energy to reduce oil use. The new solar project, named Al Dibdibah Power and Al Shagaya Renewable Energy – Phase III – Zone 1, will help achieve this goal. It will support the country’s clean energy plan and cut carbon emissions.

Prequalified Bidders Announced
As part of the process, Kuwait has prequalified two companies and four consortia. These bidders can now submit proposals to develop the project. The prequalification shows strong global interest in Kuwait’s energy shift.
Location and Importance
The project will be located in the Shagaya Renewable Energy Park. This site is a hub for renewable energy in Kuwait. It already hosts wind, solar, and thermal energy systems. The new 1.1GW solar plant will boost the park’s total output.
Learning from Dubai’s Solar Success
Kuwait’s project reflects the success of similar efforts in the region. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai is a great example. It is one of the world’s largest solar parks and has inspired many other projects. Kuwait’s solar plan follows this successful model.
Boost to Economy and Jobs
This project will not only support green energy. It will also create jobs and bring investment into Kuwait. Local companies will get chances to join, learn, and grow.
Next Steps
Now that the RFP is issued, the bidding process begins. The final bidder will design, build, and operate the solar plant. Once complete, this project will provide clean power to thousands of homes.
Kuwait is moving fast on clean energy. By investing in solar power, the country is preparing for a greener future. With support from global partners and lessons from Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, Kuwait is on the right path. This project is a key part of Kuwait’s long-term energy vision.
