GCC-China Trade Hits $297.9 Billion in 2023
In 2023, GCC-China trade reached $297.9 billion, a huge sum. China remains the GCC’s largest trading partner. However, this total fell by 5.8% compared to 2022. Despite the decline, the trade relationship stays strong and important for both sides.
GCC Exports to China
The GCC sent goods worth $158.3 billion to China last year. This marked a 16.7% drop from $190.4 billion in 2022. Petroleum and hydrocarbon products dominated exports. They accounted for 88.3% of total exports, valued at $139.8 billion. Other goods also reached China. Miscellaneous goods were worth $5.0 billion. Plastics added $4.7 billion, and organic chemicals contributed $4.1 billion. Petroleum continues to lead GCC-China trade strongly.

Imports from China
Imports from China grew in 2023, reaching $139.6 billion. This is a 10.8% increase compared to $126.6 billion in 2022. Electrical machinery and hardware formed the largest category. They accounted for 37.2% of total imports, valued at $52 billion. Miscellaneous goods followed, worth $42.8 billion. Machinery and mechanical appliances added $24.0 billion. Motor vehicles and parts contributed $10.4 billion. These numbers show growing Chinese demand in the GCC region.
Trade Balance Between GCC and China
Even with export declines, GCC-China trade stayed positive. Exports totaled $158.3 billion, while imports reached $139.6 billion. This created a trade surplus of $18.7 billion for the GCC. The surplus shows the GCC’s strong position in global trade. Petroleum products continue to be the main driver of this balance.
Future of GCC-China Trade
The GCC-China trade relationship remains robust and growing. China continues as the top trading partner of the GCC. Rising imports show that Chinese goods are in higher demand in the region. At the same time, the GCC’s petroleum exports strengthen the trade surplus. Looking ahead, both sides are likely to expand cooperation. New sectors, investments, and opportunities will support further growth in trade.
