Dubai to Launch Autonomous Taxis Trials with China’s Baidu Starting This Year

Dubai’s Big Move Towards Driverless Taxis

Dubai is gearing up to test autonomous taxis on its roads. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has joined hands with China’s Baidu to begin these trials later this year. This major step brings the city closer to its vision of using smart and sustainable transport.

First Phase: 100 Autonomous Taxis Hit the Roads

In the first stage, 100 of Baidu’s latest self-driving taxis, known as RT6 robotaxis, will begin operations. These vehicles come with advanced technology that allows them to drive without human control. However, a safety driver will be present during trials to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Full Rollout Planned for 2026

If the tests go well, Dubai will start full autonomous taxi services by 2026. The goal is to expand the fleet to at least 1,000 vehicles by 2028. This rollout is part of Dubai’s larger plan to make 25% of all city trips driverless by 2030.

Why Autonomous Taxis Matter for Dubai

Autonomous taxis will help reduce traffic accidents, since they eliminate human error. They will also improve access to transport, especially for senior citizens and people with special needs. Plus, they support Dubai’s goal to become a global leader in future mobility.

Baidu’s Excitement to Work with Dubai

Dr. Wang Yunpeng from Baidu shared his excitement about the partnership. He said this is Baidu’s biggest international project for its Apollo Go robo taxi service. The company aims to deliver a safe, efficient, and eco-friendly transport option for Dubai.

Dubai’s Smart Transport Vision

Mattar Al Tayer, head of the RTA, stressed how important this move is for Dubai. He believes the introduction of autonomous taxis will boost the public transport system and make travel easier for everyone.

Dubai residents can soon expect to see autonomous taxis as a regular part of daily life. This change marks the beginning of a smarter, safer, and more connected future for transport in the city.
