Abu Dhabi Police Warn Against Overtaking on the Hard Shoulder
Abu Dhabi Police have issued a strong warning to drivers about overtaking on the hard shoulder of the road. This is a serious traffic violation that comes with heavy penalties. According to the UAE Federal Traffic Law, offenders face a fine of Dh1,000 and six black points on their driving record.
Why Overtaking on the Hard Shoulder is Dangerous
The hard shoulder is meant for emergency vehicles, such as ambulances and police cars. It helps emergency services reach accident sites quickly. When drivers use the shoulder to overtake, they block these emergency vehicles and slow them down. This can put lives at risk in emergencies.

New Awareness Campaign
To address this issue, Abu Dhabi Police, in partnership with the Monitoring and Control Center, has launched a new awareness campaign. They released a video showing the dangers of overtaking on the hard shoulder. The video is part of the “You Comment” campaign, aimed at educating drivers on the risks of such reckless behavior. The police hope this will encourage drivers to make safer choices on the road.
Abu Dhabi Police’s Statement
Brigadier Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, the Director General of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police, emphasized that overtaking on the shoulder is highly dangerous. It puts everyone on the road at risk. He reminded drivers that the shoulder is only for emergencies. It is crucial that emergency vehicles can access accident scenes without delay to save lives.
Traffic Safety Reminders
The Directorate of Traffic and Patrols has also stressed the importance of following proper overtaking procedures. Drivers are reminded to keep a safe distance between vehicles. This helps prevent sudden stops, which can cause accidents, especially in heavy traffic.
What Drivers Need to Do
Abu Dhabi Police are urging all drivers to avoid using the hard shoulder to bypass traffic. Not only does this violate traffic laws, but it also endangers everyone on the road. Following the rules and being patient will help make roads safer for everyone. Always remember that the hard shoulder is for emergencies only.
By obeying traffic laws and avoiding risky behaviors like overtaking on the shoulder, we can all contribute to safer roads.
