A Guide to UAE Workers about New Basic Health Insurance Policy
From January 1, 2025, all private sector employees and domestic workers in the UAE must have basic health insurance. This new law primarily impacts workers in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. Employers are responsible for providing this insurance to their workers, ensuring access to essential healthcare.
Who Provides the Insurance?
Employers must purchase health insurance for their employees. It is a requirement for renewing residency permits through approved providers like the DubaiCare Network. Workers with valid permits before January 2025 must obtain insurance during permit renewal.
What’s Covered?
The Workers’ Health Insurance (WIH) covers pre-existing conditions and chronic diseases with no waiting period. It includes inpatient and outpatient care, laboratory tests, physiotherapy, and medications.
- Inpatient Care: A 20% co-payment applies, up to Dh500 per visit and Dh1,000 annually.
- Outpatient Care: A 25% co-payment applies, capped at Dh100 per visit. Follow-ups within seven days are free.
- Medications: Covered up to Dh1,500, with a 30% co-payment.
- Physiotherapy: Up to six sessions, with prior approval.
- Telehealth: includes access to virtual consultations
Exclusions
The policy does not cover pregnancy, dental care, cosmetic treatments, smoking cessation, or mental health services, except emergencies. The policy excludes vision aids and obesity treatments.
Family Coverage
Workers can include dependents like spouses and children in their insurance plan. For children, proof of the parent’s insurance is required. Adults over 64 must provide medical documents.
