Oman: Bank IBANs Mandatory for All International Money Transfers from July 1
New Rule to Ensure Smooth and Secure Fund Transfers
Starting July 1, 2025, the Central Bank of Oman has made it mandatory to use Bank IBANs (International Bank Account Numbers) for all money received from outside the country. This means anyone sending money into Oman must now include the correct IBAN of the beneficiary’s bank account.
Why This Change Matters
The new rule helps make cross-border transfers faster, safer, and more accurate. Using IBANs avoids delays caused by incorrect or missing bank details. It also protects both the sender and receiver from transfer errors or fraud.

This move brings Oman in line with global banking practices. Many countries already require IBANs for international transactions. Now, Oman joins them in strengthening its banking system.
What Is an IBAN and Why Is It Important?
An IBAN is a unique number that identifies a bank account across borders. It includes the country code, bank code, and the actual account number. When you use an IBAN, banks know exactly where to send the money. This cuts down mistakes and speeds up the process.
What Will Happen Without an IBAN?
If someone tries to send money to Oman without an IBAN, the transfer may fail. The bank may reject the transaction or return the funds. This could cause delays and extra charges. To avoid this, make sure to always provide the correct IBAN when receiving money from abroad.
What Should Oman Residents Do Now?
Residents of Oman should check with their bank and get their IBAN if they haven’t already. It is usually printed on bank statements or available through online banking. Share it with anyone sending you money from outside Oman.
Who Will This Rule Affect?
This rule affects everyone who receives money from abroad — including families, business owners, and freelancers. It also affects companies that get international payments.
A Step Toward Smarter Banking
With this new rule, Oman makes Bank IBANs mandatory to improve the accuracy and security of international money transfers. It’s a simple step that offers long-term benefits for both banks and customers.
Make sure to use the correct IBAN starting July 1 to avoid problems. This is an important update for anyone expecting money from outside Oman.
