What Happened in Pahalgam?
On April 22, a deadly attack took place in Pahalgam, a tourist hotspot in Kashmir. Militants opened fire on a group of tourists, killing 26 people—25 Indians and one Nepalese. This is one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Pakistan is also taking Retaliatory Measures.
A militant group called Kashmir Resistance claimed responsibility. Indian officials believe this group has ties to Lashkar-e-Taiba, based in Pakistan. In response, India blamed Pakistan for supporting terrorism across the border.
How India Reacted
India acted quickly after the attack. The government took strong diplomatic and logistical steps to send a message.
- It suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, which manages water sharing between the two countries.
- India also closed the Wagah-Attari border, the only land route between the nations.
- Indian authorities expelled Pakistani defense staff and cut down diplomatic teams.
- All Pakistani visas were canceled. Pakistanis in India were told to leave within 48 hours.
These actions showed that India was not going to take the attack lightly.
Pakistan Retaliatory Measures in Response
In return, Pakistan announced strong countermeasures. These Pakistan retaliatory measures have added more tension to the already strained relationship.
- Pakistan suspended all visa services for Indian nationals.
- It also closed its airspace to Indian airlines, affecting regional air travel.
These Pakistan retaliatory measures are similar to steps taken after the 2019 Pulwama attack. Back then, air travel across South Asia was heavily disrupted.

After Pakistan Retaliatory Measures What’s Next?
Global leaders are watching the situation closely. With both countries being nuclear powers, tensions must not rise further.
Peace talks seem unlikely at the moment. Both sides are sticking to their positions.
Unless diplomatic efforts begin soon, the conflict could grow worse. Pakistan retaliatory measures and India’s strong response mark a serious turning point in their relations.
