Abu Dhabi Robotaxi is gearing up to introduce self-driving taxis, marking a major step in smart transportation. The government is pushing for innovative, eco-friendly mobility solutions, and robotaxis are a key part of this plan.
Uber and WeRide Partnership for Self-Driving Taxis
In September 2024, Uber teamed up with Chinese tech firm WeRide to bring Abu Dhabi Robotaxi services to the UAE. WeRide is the first company to get a national license to test and operate self-driving cars on public roads.
At first, the robotaxis will have safety drivers, but by 2025, they will be fully autonomous. These self-driving taxis will be available through the Uber app, offering a seamless ride-hailing experience.
TXAI Driverless Taxi Pilot in Abu Dhabi
Before Uber’s partnership, Abu Dhabi had already started testing robotaxis under the TXAI brand. In December 2023, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) joined forces with AI company G42’s Bayanat to roll out self-driving taxis.
The first phase of TXAI trials used five autonomous vehicles operating on Yas Island. Each car had a safety officer to ensure smooth operation. After a successful run, authorities planned to expand the fleet and extend service areas.

- Reduce traffic congestion by optimizing routes.
- Improve safety with advanced sensors and AI-powered decision-making.
- Lower carbon emissions by using electric or hybrid vehicles.
What’s Next for Robotaxis in Abu Dhabi?
Abu Dhabi is committed to making self-driving taxis a reality. If trials go well, robotaxis could become a permanent part of daily commuting by 2026. This project could also inspire other cities to adopt smart transportation.
The Abu Dhabi Robotaxi initiative is a step toward a more efficient and sustainable future. Soon, residents and visitors may hail a self-driving cab with just a tap on their phones!
