Dubai's energy demand

Dubai’s energy demand has grown by 5.4% in 2024, reaching 59,594 gigawatt hours (GWh). In comparison, the city consumed 56,516 GWh in 2023. This increase highlights Dubai’s rapid growth in population, business, and tourism.

What’s Driving the Increase in Dubai’s Energy Demand?

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), attributes this rise to Dubai’s strong economic expansion. More people are moving to the city, businesses are growing, and tourism remains a key industry. As a result, the demand for electricity continues to climb.

Dubai is known for its ambitious development projects, including residential communities, commercial spaces, and industrial zones. These projects require more electricity, adding to the overall energy consumption.

How Dubai is Meeting the Growing Energy Demand

To keep up with the rising demand, DEWA has expanded its power generation capacity. Currently, Dubai’s total installed capacity is 17.179 gigawatts (GW). Importantly, 20% of this capacity now comes from clean energy sources.

Dubai’s leadership is committed to sustainability, and several initiatives support this vision. The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 aim to make the city 100% reliant on clean energy by mid-century.

Peak Energy Usage Also on the Rise

Along with overall energy consumption, peak electricity usage has also increased. In 2024, Dubai recorded a peak demand of 10.76 GW, a 3.4% increase from the previous year. This peak reflects the highest amount of electricity used at one time, usually during hot summer months when air conditioning is in full swing.

DEWA’s Role in Supporting Sustainable Growth

DEWA continues to invest in improving Dubai’s power infrastructure. The organization focuses on expanding transmission and distribution networks to ensure reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply.

By integrating more clean energy sources, DEWA is reducing dependence on traditional fossil fuels. Solar power, in particular, plays a key role in Dubai’s energy future. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, one of the world’s largest solar projects, is a major contributor to Dubai’s energy supply.

What Lies Ahead for Dubai’s Energy Sector?

Dubai’s economic future looks bright, with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 aiming to double the city’s economy over the next decade. As the city grows, so will its energy demand.

To stay ahead, Dubai must continue investing in clean energy, improving efficiency, and expanding its power infrastructure. With DEWA’s strategic initiatives, Dubai is on track to becoming a global leader in sustainable energy.

Dubai’s energy demand is rising, but the city is well-prepared to handle this growth. Through innovation and sustainability, Dubai is shaping a cleaner and more energy-efficient future.
