Del Rey Takes Control at Ras Al Khaimah Championship
Alejandro Del Rey made a big move towards his first DP World Tour win after a solid, bogey-free 66 in the third round at Al Hamra Golf Club. The 26-year-old now leads by two shots at 16 under par, after a steady performance under pressure.
Strong Start and Early Lead
Del Rey began the day two shots behind the leader, Marcus Armitage. However, he quickly made up ground with three birdies on the front nine, taking the lead by the turn. His consistency allowed him to stay ahead, even though he faced a few challenges.
Key Moments in the Round
Although Del Rey didn’t feel he played as well as in previous rounds, his short game was exceptional. He made smart decisions and avoided mistakes, which kept him in control. A chip-in birdie on the second hole, followed by another birdie at the third, narrowed the gap to just one stroke. When Armitage bogeyed the fourth, Del Rey capitalized, sinking a ten-foot birdie putt on the eighth to claim the lead.
Del Rey’s Solid Performance
Del Rey’s composure showed through on the middle stretch of the course, where he made important pars. At the 14th, he recovered from a tricky spot and managed a birdie after a mis-hit tee shot. A solid bunker shot on the 15th kept the momentum going, while an excellent approach at the 17th led to another birdie. He wrapped up his round with a nervy tee shot on the 18th that nearly went into the water, but Del Rey finished strong with one more birdie.
Looking Ahead
Del Rey now leads at 16 under par, with a two-shot advantage over Armitage, who sits at 14 under. He is focused and ready for a strong finish on Sunday.
In other news, UAE’s Adrian Otaegui finished the round with a 72, putting him in 45th place, while Joshua Grenville-Wood also shot a 72 and is in 63rd place.
